The Joker could print history at the Oscars and repeat the success of the Godfather movie

On Sunday nights, Monday, the 92nd Academy Awards are held, with the Joker leading the team with the most nominations this year. Director Todd Phillips' movie has been nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. We can assume that the movie will not take home all 11 nominations, but if it does take home one specific award it will officially print the history of the Oscars, and Batman's greatest enemy will enter the record book.

As pointed out on Good Morning America, if Joaquin Phoenix wins an Oscar for Best Actor for a Joker role (where he is a big favorite with a probability of as much as 94.12%) then he and Heath Ledger will be actors with an Oscar-winning role for the same role. This has only happened in Oscar history so far when Marlon Brando won an Oscar in 1972 for his role as Don Vito Corleone in "The Godfather," and then he repeated it to Robert De Niro for the same role, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1974. , playing a young version of the character in The Godfather Part II.

It is worth noting that while it is not super common for actors to be nominated to play the same character, it has happened many times in Oscar history, though most of them are for playing real-life characters or classic dramatic characters.

Kenneth Branagh and Laurence Olivier were both nominated for the role of Henry V, albeit at 45-year intervals; Anthony Hopkins and Frank Langella have both been nominated for the role of former US President Richard Nixon. Some actors were even nominated in the same year for the same role, which happened in 1999 when Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench were nominated for Elizabeth I in two separate films; and on two occasions a pair of actors were nominated to play the same characters in the same movie (Kate Winslet & Gloria Stuart in Titanic 1997 and Kate Winslet & Judi Dench in Iris in 2001).

To reiterate, only Brando and De Niro actually won to play the same character, but they could be joined by Ledger and Phoenix in just two days. Phoenix paid tribute to Ledger before accepting the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor, calling him his "favorite actor" and standing on his shoulders while receiving the award.
