Former Batman Ben Affleck thanked Marvel's Iron Man Robert Downey Jr.

Ben Affleck has been on the difficult road for the last few years, struggling with his career as an actor and filmmaker, but also in his personal life. Affleck had a very public divorce from Jennifer Garner in 2015 after being married for 10 years, and the couple even officially divorced in 2017.

That failed marriage revealed Ben Affleck's struggles with alcohol, depression and alleged infidelity and/or harassment. Affleck has since been back on the path of sobriety and stability in his life, and in a new interview former Batman star says that Marvel's Iron Man is Robert Downey Jr. was one of its mainstays.

He actually thanks the stars of the Marvel Movie Universe, Robert Downey Jr., and Bradley Cooper as two great celebrities who helped him with his sobriety, in an interview with Diane Swayer at GMA:

"… You know, I realized that Bradley [Cooper] and Robert [Downey Jr.] helped me a lot and supported me, and they're wonderful people."

Before they became bright popular stars in the Marvel Movie Universe, Robert Downey Jr. and Bradley Cooper underwent their 'baptism of fire' sobriety. Cooper had a troubling reputation for substance use in the early 2000s, beginning his recovery in 2004. At the same time, Downey Jr was already considered an almost failed actor in Hollywood. In fact, when Marvel took him on the role of starting their MCU in the 2008 movie Iron Man, it seemed like a big risk. However, Downey prepared them for one of the biggest comebacks in Hollywood, and there were not many better examples between him and Cooper of how he could get back on track.

Affleck is currently promoting his new movie The Way Back, a sports drama starring a coach who struggles with alcoholism and depression while inspiring an unexpected team of basketball players. It could almost be said that he would transfer his life, or at least that ugly part to the big screen.
