Myths, misconceptions, and experiences about the freelance

I like that Freelance discussions are often developed at this forum. But what I don't like is that sometimes misinformation is spread that freelance is easy and starts with nothing. In reality, this is not the case - to succeed and to make the transition from meksel * to a successful freelancer who sets his conditions, it takes a lot of learning, dealing with complex clients, and losing sleep.

* the term is coined, originating from Indus spamming forums and often asking the question "How I mek a sel on Fiverr / Upwork")

Myth 1: Freelancer is getting overnight.

The three most frequently asked questions from beginners are:

Question 1: I started freelancing a week ago because I have no sales yet?

There is no answer to the first question. It is relative, you can make the first sale in a few hours, but sometimes it can take several months.

You need to be as patient as you can. If it doesn't happen for a certain period, this is an indicator that you need to be more visible to potential customers.

Question 2: I know how to scribble on a photoshop, edit videos in After Effects, write blog content, do Data-Entry, write fitness programs. I want to start freelance, will any of this success? Is there a market for it? (I received a similar question in a private message from a member of this forum who read this thread)

The most correct answer to these questions is that, as in any other business, no one can succeed here overnight. The misconception is that you are creating a Javier / Upwork profile and the next time you say "Goodbye Poverty". Unfortunately, reading freaking out is often the way I read it at Kaigana / Feminine.

I tell you this from my own experience, I started dealing with freelance in 2014. At first, I offered services for everything possible, from "fake reviews" on Amazon, data entry, to graphic design, and I even missed offering quantum physics classes.

Over time, watching educational videos and reading books, visiting forums, and consulting with more experienced freelancers ... I realized that the more specific services you focus on, the more successful you will be.

So, for the start, focus on offering the services you know to run smoothly. At least it was a banal thing. Over time, you will gain regular customers who may require a related service.

I forgot to mention, some people already work in the company and have experience. For them, the whole point is how to present and communicate that they have experience. Here is the portfolio.

Question 3: How Much Money Can You Make?

I know that we are starting to make money from startups - money is the main motivation. But keep in mind that as a beginner, you will most likely make a living on peanuts and beer. If you play your cards properly, develop and become more competitive only then can this become your daily profession?

Myth 2: You only work on projects that interest you.

No, for beginners it is not. Usually, in this situation, you will need ratings and good reviews. So customers of all types are accepted. Yes, we can be picky, but not in the extreme.

Myth 3: You determine your hours.

This is true, but not all apply equally. Many beginners make a big mistake and do not realize that customers need to be communicated in which time zone you are in when you are available and the like.

Most freelancers I know personally do not have their working hours because they are afraid of losing a client. So very often they work up to 3/4 hour in the morning. To be honest I also belonged to this group some time ago.

Remember, if you want to set your hours, set boundaries, communicate with your clients what time is available, whether you work on weekends or not.

Now, at some point, you may find yourself working on several projects and having clients scattered around the world. Perhaps at such a time, you will deviate from your rules but never get into regular practice.

Myth 4: Freelancing is not a permanent source of revenue.

Rule number one (with very poor translation) You should know that you do not have to put all the eggs in the same basket. There is a need for diversification, to be present on multiple platforms and, above all, to gain a few regular customers. You might even find another way of earning money, whether it's passive or not.

I have a friend who uploads videos to YouTube, earns very little from it, but in our Macedonian conditions, he has enough to cover while having a bad period of freelance.

Besides, each of us has indeed had good and bad months. If you want to have stable freelance financing you need to know when to save. That is, in the good months to put money aside - so that you can cover the lack of finances in the "dry" periods.

I have been overwhelmed by the effects of the "work burnout" because I had set no limits. On the next occasion, if this topic develops, I will discuss more on that topic.

In order not to be bored and not all in one post - I switch the mic to @Rufflesaurus. to continue with our previous discussion on freelancing. What I know this time is that we will be argued, civilized and above all informative.

I also hope that other freelancers will join and contribute to this discussion.

Elon Musk again promises private space flights

Elon Musk's SpaceX company has signed an agreement with a space tourism agency to organize a trip into Earth's orbit for several adventurous travelers. Space Adventures, an agency that has organized eight tours to the International Space Station from 2001 to 2009, plans to organize a four-passenger flight on SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft. The journey would be completed by the end of 2021, according to a Space Adventures statement released yesterday. Passengers will spend a maximum of five days orbiting the Earth, stranded in a 3.96-meter-long spacecraft. The flight path predicts that private space tourists will fly two to three times the altitude of the orbit of the International Space Station, says Eric Anderson, president of Space Adventures. It will be the furthest distance from Earth anyone has found in decades, meaning that passengers on this flight will have a sight similar to what astronauts saw on NASA's Gemini 11 mission in 1966, Anderson said on Tw...

SpaceX lost its Falcon 9 after the successful launch of Starlink satellites

SpaceX successfully launched a new set of 60 Starlink satellites but was left without a Falcon 9 rocket. After the launch was complete, the rocket was to return to a drone ship, but missed it and ended up in the sea. This is the first such case in nearly 4 years, the last Falcon 9 rocket missed a drone ship in June 2016 The rocket was previously used for the CRS-17 mission in May 2019, then for the CRS-18 mission in July 2019, and for the December 2019 mission. Successful landings have had a positive impact on the business success of the company as the more rockets it saves the more it can use for the next launch, thereby reducing costs. It is not known why the rocket missed the landing target. Maybe you want to read about  The new Fortnite brings a bullied cat, balloon riding and Deadpool.
