An alternate version of Thanos's destruction of Captain America's shield has finally come to light with the newly released concept art from Avengers: Endgame.
As we know, before all the heroes could return, the task of stopping Thanos had fallen on the backs of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. The main three heroes of the MCU were detained separately for much of the Infinity War, so joining them was a treat for fans. But it wasn't an easy fight, Thanos beat each of them relatively easily. At one point, the Crazy Titan even managed to destroy Captain America's shield - breaking it with his wicked double-edged sword. The scene could obviously have gone a different route, as revealed in a new concept illustration for Endgame.
Marvel Studios' visual development manager Ryan Meinerding shares an illustration of how Thanos could break Captain America's shield. Instead of being smashed in half by the Crazy Titan, the villain would punch right through him and smash his shield through the middle. Check out the concept art of Avengers: Endgame below, which Meinerding shared on his official Instagram profile.
This moment would look great on the big screen, especially for Thanos because he would not need his sword to destroy the usually indestructible vibranium shield. It would effectively show how strong he was even without the help of the Infinity Stones, and that would come at a good time given that much of Endgame was focused on heroes by then.
However, this scene would deprive Captain America of the subtle moment that summarizes everything we need to know about him. In the movie, after his shield was cut in half and dropped to the ground, he did not think to give up. Instead, he tightened the straps of his broken shield, which meant he had every intention of continuing the fight despite his very poor prospects. Fortunately, help came at the right time, Iron Man and Thor taking over Thanos.
Steve Rogers may no longer be in the MCU, but his legacy as Captain America will continue with Sam Wilson - his personal choice to wear the iconic shield. Sam’s adventures as Captain America’s next incarnation will be featured in the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is set after Avengers: Endgame.
